British Values
Promoting British Values at Lewis Street
Lewis Street Primary School is fully committed to the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
British Values are reinforced throughout school life in the following ways:
-
Democracy: Democratic processes are deeply embedded at Lewis Street. Each class elects a councillor who represents every single child in the class on the School Council. The School Council regularly meets with Senior Leaders and feeds back to class every week.
-
Individual Liberty: At Lewis Street our policies ensure that all children can learn in a safe environment. Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and to know how to keep themselves safe.
-
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs: At Lewis Street we achieve this through developing every child's awareness of their place in a culturally diverse community and society. We want our children to understand the community they live in as well as the global community and how they can contribute to both and make a positive difference.
-
The Rule of Law: The importance of laws and rules are reinforced in many ways. School rules link to our four values: excellence; respect; challenge and self-belief. These school rules and values apply to our whole school community and are a framework for the way we all conduct ourselves. We help children understand the wider rule of law in society, working in partnership with the police.
-
Mutual Respect: Our school ethos is built around our core values. It is these core values of: excellence; respect; challenge and self-belief that will underpin everything we do. We hope that by living in an environment where mutual respect is demonstrated daily by our children, they will enter the wider world understanding its importance.
