Welcome to Year 1!
This year marks an exciting transition for our Year 1 pupils as they take their next steps into Key Stage 1. Throughout the year, we will nurture their curiosity, confidence, and independence through a broad, hands-on, and engaging curriculum.
In English, pupils will explore a delightful range of fiction and non-fiction texts, including The Bumblebear, non-fiction books about bees, and The Leaf Thief / The Snow Thief. They will develop their early reading, vocabulary, and sentence-building skills, with a strong focus on core writing fundamentals: using capital letters, finger spaces, and full stops accurately.
In Maths, pupils will begin by securing a deep understanding of place value within 10, before progressing to addition and subtraction within 10. Practical resources, pictorial representations, and hands-on activities will be used throughout the year to build confidence and fluency in number.
Across History and Geography, pupils will investigate the world around them by exploring ourselves, personal timelines, and the history we are making today. They will also carry out fieldwork and local studies to discover and map the area surrounding our school.
In the wider curriculum, pupils will explore Art through observational painting inspired by the works of Vincent van Gogh and Georgia O’Keeffe. In P.E., children will develop their coordination, balance, and expression through multi-skills and dance units, alongside ongoing learning in Science, RE, and PSHE.
Trips and Special Events
Year 1 pupils have plenty of exciting experiences to look forward to this year, including local area walks, library visits, seasonal performances, Sports Day, and special end-of-year celebrations.
Reading at Home
We appreciate that it is not always possible to read every night with your child, but we ask that you make every effort to read at least 5 times per week with them. Regular reading practice at home makes a tremendous difference to early phonics and fluency. Reading at home doesn’t just mean their school reading book—it could be a bedtime story, a picture book, a comic, or even signs and labels when out and about!

P.E.
P.E. days this year are Thursday and Friday. On P.E. days, please send your child to school with their P.E. kit in a named bag (or wearing their kit, depending on school policy).
P.E. kit consists of: a plain white t-shirt, black shorts, and black PE pumps. Children may wear plain black jogging pants and a warm jumper or school hoodie in the colder months for outdoor lessons.
Water Bottles & Snacks
Don’t forget to send a labelled water bottle into school every day—staying hydrated is essential for energetic learners! Children can purchase breadsticks at the start of each half term (see the school office), enjoy the daily free Key Stage 1 fruit/vegetable snack, or bring their own healthy, nut-free snack for break time.
