Year 5
Text
Welcome everybody to the Year 5 section of the website!
Class Teachers: Mrs Lowe and Miss Newman
LSAs: Miss Shearer, Miss Bryant & Miss Thompson
We hope you are ready for a fantastic year in Year 5!
Please read below for all the fun and exciting topics we will be learning this term. If you have any questions, then please don’t hesitate to ask one of the Year 5 team.
Reading at home
Across the school we emphasise how important it is for your children to read at home. There are countless benefits, like expanding their vocabulary, fostering concentration and sharpening their memory.
Children are expected to bring their books in every day so they can be heard to read at any time. If your child has finished reading their book, it will be changed at school.
We appreciate that it is not always possible to read every night with your child but we do ask that you make every effort to read at least 5 times per week with them. Reading at home doesn’t always mean their school reading books, it could be anything from a newspaper, magazine, kindle books to instructions of a board game!
Homework
Homework will be given out every Friday with the hand-in date the following Friday. Homework will include spellings for a test on Fridays, as well as maths, reading and grammar activities.
English
Inspired by the heart-warming animated film 'Oktopodi', we will explore the story from different characters’ perspectives. WE will write in a range of styles and genres, using rich vocabulary and descriptive language to express thoughts, feelings and motivations while developing empathy, creativity and a deeper understanding of viewpoint.
Using Louis Sachar’s Holes, we will explore themes of friendship, resilience and justice. We will develop our reading and writing skills through studying these themes and ideas, as well as using evidence from the text to support ideas and deepen our understanding of characters and events.
Maths
Get ready to become a Maths Master!
We start the year exploring the exciting world of place value, working with numbers up to and beyond one million. We will sharpen our addition and subtraction skills, tackling increasingly challenging calculations with confidence. Through multiplication and division, we will discover patterns, solve puzzles and use efficient strategies to answer problems. Along the way, we will explain our thinking, reason mathematically and apply our skills to real-life situations.
Every lesson will help us grow in confidence, accuracy and resilience as we become skilled and successful mathematicians!
History
In History we will be learning about Vikings.
Set sail on an exciting adventure into the world of the Vikings! Discover fierce warriors, daring explorers and skilled traders. Uncover Viking myths, investigate ancient artefacts, and find out how these remarkable people changed life in Britain forever.
Art
Get ready to weave, create and imagine! Inspired by the colourful, giant woven playgrounds of artist Toshiko MacAdam, we will explore different weaving techniques using a variety of materials. We will experiment with colour, pattern and texture to create our own eye-catching artworks and discover how art can transform everyday spaces.
Computing
Become a game designer and bring your ideas to life! In this exciting topic, you will learn how games are created, design your own characters and challenges, and use coding skills to make interactive games. Along the way, you will develop creativity, problem-solving skills and computational thinking.
Spanish
¡Hola! Get ready to talk about the seasons in Spanish. You will learn the names of the four seasons, describe the weather and say which season is your favourite. Through songs, games and conversations, you will build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in Spanish.
P.E
Our P.E days are Mondays and Tuesdays. Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing their full uniform and brings their P.E kit in a bag on P.E days.
PE kit consists of: a plain white t-shirt, black shorts and black PE pumps / black trainers. Children may wear black jogging pants and a jumper in the colder months if they go outside. Due to the limited space we have in the cloakroom in our classroom, please can children refrain from bringing in large rucksacks/handbags. They are too big for the pegs and children cannot hang their coats up properly. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
Water bottles
Don’t forget to bring water bottles in each day - it is important for the children to stay hydrated. Please put a label on bottles and refill them every day.
