Welcome to Year 4!

This year is an exciting and busy one for our Year 4 pupils as they continue to develop their knowledge, confidence and independence. Throughout the year, we will explore a wide range of interesting topics, develop new skills and encourage the children to become enthusiastic learners who are ready to challenge themselves and try their best.

In English, pupils will explore a range of exciting books, including The Butterfly Lion, Charlotte’s Web, Matilda and The Boy at the Back of the Class. They will develop their reading, writing, vocabulary and comprehension skills through a variety of activities. Our writing will include diary entries, non-chronological reports and letters, giving children opportunities to write for different purposes and audiences. We will focus on developing descriptive language, organising ideas clearly, improving sentence structure and using grammar and punctuation accurately.

In Maths, pupils will build on their understanding of number, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, measurement, geometry and statistics. A particularly important focus this year will be preparing for the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The children will be expected to answer 25 multiplication questions, with just 6 seconds to answer each question. Regular practice will help them build speed, accuracy and confidence. We will practise multiplication tables throughout the year, so please encourage your child to practise regularly at home too.

Our Science learning will cover Biology, Physics and Chemistry. In Biology, we will investigate classification, photosynthesis and the human body. In Physics, we will explore states of matter and different types of rock, developing our understanding of materials and the world around us. In Chemistry, we will learn about forces, magnets and gravity through practical investigations and experiments. We will encourage children to ask questions, make predictions, observe carefully and explain their findings using scientific vocabulary.

Across the wider curriculum, pupils will enjoy History, Geography, Art, Design Technology, RE, Computing, Music and PSHE. These subjects will provide opportunities to investigate the past, explore the world around us, develop creativity, learn about different cultures and beliefs, and build important personal and social skills.

Trips and Special Events

Year 4 have lots to look forward to this year! We are planning exciting educational visits, including a trip to the library, a visit to the mosque and a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry. We will also enjoy a walk along the canal, giving us an opportunity to explore our local environment and link our learning to the world around us. To finish the year, we have a special surprise trip planned for the children to look forward to!
These experiences will help bring our learning to life and give the children opportunities to explore, ask questions and make lasting memories together.

Reading at Home

Reading is one of the most important things your child can do to support their learning. Reading regularly helps children develop their vocabulary, improve their comprehension, build confidence and become better writers. We encourage all children to read at home every day, whether this is their school reading book, a library book, a chapter book or another text that interests them.
In Year 4, we have a special Friday treat for children who have read every day during the week! This is a way to celebrate their effort, encourage positive reading habits and recognise the importance of making reading part of our daily routine.
Please remember to record your child's reading in their reading record each day. Even a short reading session can make a big difference over time. We appreciate your support in helping your child develop a love of reading and become a confident, independent reader.

P.E

4C PE days - Tuesday and Thursday (Swimming)

4A PE days - Tuesday and Thursday

Please ensure that your child comes to school with their PE kit on these days.

PE kit consists of: a plain white t-shirt, black shorts and black PE pumps. Children may wear black jogging pants and a jumper in the colder months if they go outside. Due to the limited space we have in the cloakroom in our classroom, please can children refrain from bringing in large rucksacks/handbags. They are too big for the pegs and children cannot hang their coats up properly. Instead, we encourage them to bring the blue school reading book bags to put their belongings in. Thank you for your co-operation with this.

Water bottles & snacks

Don’t forget to bring water bottles in each day - it is important for the children to stay hydrated throughout the day. Please put a label on bottles and refill them every day.

Children can purchase milk cartons at the beginning of each half term (see the school office) and bring a healthy, nut free snack for break time. Please be reminded that we are a healthy eating school, if a snack is chocolate, crisps, cake or sweets it is NOT a healthy snack.

Swimming

In Year 4 we have the exciting opportunity to learn and improve our swimming skills! These lessons will happen once a week and our currently on Thursdays. 4C will attend swimming from September - February, 4A will attend February - July.

For swimming your child will need:

  • Swimming hat

  • Towel

  • Swimming costume/Swimming trunks. (No bikinis)

They can also bring a healthy snack to the pool.

It is recommended that you send your child in with their swimming costumes/trunks underneath their school uniform. This will make getting changed much quicker for them. If you are doing this, please remember to provide your child with a spare change of underwear. We also ask that you ensure your child has a warm waterproof coat, as we will be walking to the leisure centre in all weathers.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year together, full of exciting learning opportunities, new challenges and memorable experiences. Thank you for your continued support. Working together, we can help every child in Year 4 feel happy, confident and ready to succeed!
