Year 2
Text
Welcome to Year 2!
Class Teachers: Mr Byrne and Miss Hilton
LSAs: Miss Neziri, Miss Lamb and Mr Buyuktas
If you have any questions, then please don’t hesitate to ask one of the Year 2 team.
Reading at home
In Year 2, your child will need to bring their reading record and reading book into school every day. Each child will read with an adult and a new reading book will be provided when necessary.
We appreciate that it is not always possible to read every night with your child, but do ask that you make every effort to read at least 5 times per week with them, and make a comment in their reading records.
Reading at home doesn’t always mean their school reading books, it could be anything from a newspaper, magazine, or kindle books to instructions for a board game. Remember we also have our online eBooks available through RWI Oxford Owls.
Maths
We will be developing our understanding of place value before moving on to addition and subtraction, using practical resources and mathematical reasoning to explain our thinking.
English
Our key text will be Meerkat Mail. We will explore the story through reading, discussion and writing, developing vocabulary, sentence structure and our ability to communicate ideas.
Geography
We will investigate hot and cold places around the world and consider the question: “Would you like to live in a hot or cold place?” We will explore different environments and compare how people live in different parts of the world.
Science
We will continue with our spiral curriculum, revisiting and building on key scientific knowledge and skills from previous learning.
Art
We will explore the work of Pablo Picasso, with a particular focus on The Weeping Woman. We will investigate colour, shape, line and emotion and use these ideas to develop our own artwork.
Design & Technology
We will be designing and making fire engines, exploring mechanisms and how components such as wheels and chassis work together to create a functional vehicle.
PSHE
We will be learning about the Zones of Regulation, developing our understanding of emotions and exploring strategies that can help us to manage how we feel.
R.E.
We will explore the question: “How should we care for others and the world, and why does it matter?” We will consider different beliefs, values and responsibilities towards others and our environment.
Computing
We will become Route Explorers, developing our understanding of routes, instructions and computational thinking.
P.E
Our P.E. days are Mondays and Fridays
Children can come into school wearing their PE kits on these days. Please ensure that it is the correct PE kit - white t-shirt, black shorts/jogging bottoms and plain black trainers/pumps. Children can wear their school jumpers/cardigans if the sessions are outside.
Please see our class newsletter for more information about our learning this term.
Water bottles & snacks
Don’t forget to bring water bottles in each day – the children need to stay hydrated throughout the day. Please put a label on bottles and refill them every day.
Children can purchase breadsticks and milk at the start of each half term (see the school office) or bring a healthy, nut-free snack for break time.
